Feature Story

Rick Sealock: Still Shit-Disturbing After All These Years

Illustrator Rick Sealock has been profiled in Applied Arts three times – the first time famously hugging a cow. This is both a reference to his upbringing – born on a farm, near High River, Alberta – and a tribute to the livestock motif that kept cropping up in his high-energy, off-the-wall work.

Our April/May 2005 profile revealed Sealock's penchant for pushing the envelope, with one magazine art director explaining (good-naturedly):  “He's always pushing you to get in as much shit as you can with the publisher.” Sealock admitted he's "always been an instigator, always wanted to push the envelope. See what shit I can get away with – that's my motto." . . . Read the Blast from the Past profile.

This month, I’ll go into a bit more detail about what exactly to do – every day, every week and every month – to get that desirable result. . . . Read more.

Unnatural and Uncomfortable

by Will Novosedlik

I recall giving a talk about brand, a particular brand, to an audience of employees at a sister company. It was one of those training sessions in which famous brand cases are thrown up on the wall and everyone gets involved in the dialogue. Or at least that's how it's supposed to work. . . . Read more.
